What kind of a projector do you need for a bar?
Like choosing a spirit for your signature cocktails, the type of projector you need for a bar depends on a number of factors such as the size of the space, the distance between the projector and screen, the lighting conditions of the room, the type of content you plan to display and the projection screen size.
Here is what to look for when you’re shopping for a barroom projector:
Brightness
When it comes to choosing a projector for a bar or restaurant, It’s all about brightness. The brightness of a projector is measured in lumens, and it refers to the amount of light the projector can produce. A brighter projector will generally produce a clearer, more vibrant image, even in a well-lit room.
In a cocktail lounge or eatery setting, there’s likely to be a good deal of ambient light, especially during the day or in the evening when the lights are on. This can make it difficult to see a projected image if the projector is not bright enough. A projector with at least 3,000-7,500 lumens is recommended for use in a well-lit social environment like a sports pub or a pool hall.
Another consideration when it comes to projector brightness is the size of the screen or image being projected. A larger screen will require a brighter projector to produce a clear image.
Ultimately, the brightness of the projector will have a big impact on the viewing experience for customers in a bar or restaurant setting. A projector that is too dim will make it difficult to see the image. It's important to choose a projector with the right minimum level of brightness for your specific needs and environment.
Picture Quality
Part of the reason people want to go out to watch the game is that they want to get an experience they can’t achieve at home. That’s why your pub projector should offer a picture quality that’s better than what they’d get at home.
Resolution
For that reason you’ll want to get a 4K resolution projector. With a 4K projector for a bar, your patrons will be able to watch football, baseball, basketball and more with a level of detail that will take their breath away.
Color Gamut
Because people are so familiar with their favorite team colors, you’ll also want to look for a beamer with a high level of color accuracy. Without that accuracy the image just won’t look right.
A wider color gamut gives the best projectors for sports bars more hues to pick from which can enhance the realism of what everyone is watching.
Contrast
Good contrast is always important, though it's not as crucial as it is for a home theater projector. This is because most content that you'll be watching will be bright and vibrant and therefore doesn't require the high levels for home cinema usage.
For karaoke bar projectors higher contrast is somewhat more important because it can make it easier to read the lyrics on the screen.
You can learn more about the importance of projector contrast here. For restaurant settings, you'll want to look for a projector with a sequential contrast ratio over 1000:1.
HDR
For a taproom you don’t need to worry about how the projector handles HDR because that would dim it and as we mentioned above, brighter is better. Also most live TV events aren’t broadcast with HDR, so unless you make movie nights a regular event, paying more for an HDR projector isn’t needed.
Ease of Installation and Maintenance
You’re not an expert in projection, you just want to run the local tavern. And you definitely don’t want to face any issues during a big game. That’s why you want to get a barroom projector that’s easy to install and easy to maintain.
When it comes to projection installation, features like horizontal and vertical lens shift and extensive zoom range make it easier to perfectly align the image to the projector screen regardless of where the projector is mounted in the room. Being able to shift and zoom the image without distorting it makes it much easier to install. An ultra short throw projector that doesn’t need to sit on the other side of the room can also make installation much more simple.
Maintaining a projector needs to be simple. You don’t want your bar keepers waiters or yourself having to fuss with changing filters or cleaning dust off the projector on a regular basis. Unfortunately if you want to keep your device running longer at full capacity you’ll need to clean it and the filters on a semi-regular basis.
With maintaining a projector one of the main tasks you can avoid is changing the bulb. By buying a laser projector for your establishment there is no need to change out a dead lamp because laser projectors can last for 20,000+ hours without any dimming.
Smoky Rooms And Projectors
If your state or local laws allow smoking indoors at bars this could cause a problem with projection. A smoke filled barroom is going to soften the projected image because the vapors in the air can block the light from reaching the screen.
It would be better to get an ultra short throw projector for a smoking lounge so there’s less obstructive fog between the projector and the screen.
The other issue with a smoker friendly establishment is that the soot is going to more quickly clog up the filters so they’ll need to be changed and cleaned more regularly.
You’ll also want to look closely at the manufacturer warranty because some may not honor it if the projector is in a smoky environment. If you plan to use your beamer in a tavern that permits smoking, give our experts a call and we can help you figure out the optimal solution.

What kind of a projector screen do you need for a bar?
The projector you get for your diner or cocktail lounge is only half the equation for your display. The projection screen is just as important to the overall visual experience. Here's what to look for in a projector display for your bar.
Screen Type
The type of screen you get is completely up to your own personal taste. Most food and drink establishments typically go with a fixed frame projector screen.
However, if you plan to use your space for more than than just watching sports on a big screen, you might want to consider buying a retractable display. This allows the screen to roll up and out of the way when not in use. You'll want to get a motorized projector screen that can be withdrawn at the push of a button instead of a manual one because this will make your servers' lives significantly easier.
You'll want to get a cinema screen that mounts to wall or hangs from the ceiling.
Screen Size
Just like most things in life, when it comes to projection displays, bigger is better. This is especially true for alehouses and diners trying to attract new customers and retain regulars. So when owners ask us, "What size projector screen should I get for a bar?", we tell them to get the largest one they can fit and afford.
Projector Screen Size Recommendations
Typically if you want to achieve the big screen experience you'll want to get at least a 100 inch projector screen. Though many sports-bars go with a 120 or even 150 inch screen size.
But if you truly want to impress your patrons that will get them telling their friends about your establishment (and assuming you've got the budget and room size for it) consider investing in a humongous 200 inch projector screen. Free word of mouth advertising alone would cover the cost.
Aspect Ratio
With regards to aspect ratio (the dimensions of the display) you’ll want to get a 16:9 projector screen. Because you’ll almost exclusively be watching sporting events and television on your setup, you’ll want your screen dimensions to match the content’s.
Ambient Light Rejection
Most patrons don’t want to eat and drink in darkness, and while pubs are typically not super well-lit you’ll still want to keep some lights on. The brightness of a room has a huge impact on how the picture will appear on the display. The brighter the room the duller the projected image.
However, there are a few ways to overcome this challenge.
The first step as we mentioned above is to get a projector that outputs enough lumens.
The next way is to get a higher gain movie screen. Gain is a measurement describing the light reflectivity of a surface. High gain projector screens increase the brightness of the image reflected back at the audience. However, high gain screens typically have a more narrow viewing angle, so this isn’t always the answer for most dining environments.
The best way to deal with projecting in a well lit room is to buy an ambient light rejecting screen. An ALR screen is one with a specially engineered surface that only accepts light hitting it at the angle coming from the beamer. All other light is either absorbed or rejected by the surface.
For most venues that sell food and beverages, our most recommended way to deal with ambient light is to pair an ultra short throw projector with a UST screen. These screens only accept light coming from below where the device is positioned so you get the brightest, most vivid image possible.
Viewing Angle
You’ll of course want everyone in the barroom to be able to see what’s on the screen so that they can take in the bright vibrant picture. That’s why viewing angle is crucial to help you decide which screen to buy. If a customer is outside of the viewing angle, then the image will look dim and washed out like a watered down drink. Longer barrooms don't need to worry about this as much but for a wider tavern setting you’ll want to get a projector screen with a wide viewing cone of at least 120 degrees.
Luckily, ProjectorScreen.com makes it easy to shop because every product has this handy chart that shows you the viewing cone of the screen.
Sometimes you may need to sacrifice some of the ambient light rejection properties to achieve the wide viewing cone.
How Much Does A Projection Setup For A Bar Cost?
The price to buy and install a screen and projector for your bar can vary widely depending on your needs. Factors like the size of your screen and the picture quality of your beamer can greatly impact the cost. Important features like a high lumen output and ambient light rejection, will also increase the amount you'll need to pay.
To achieve that "Wow!" factor from your display, you can expect to your setup to cost between $4,000-$8,000. For a truly gigantic projector screen you'll likely be spending north of $10,000 on both pieces of projection equipment.
This may seem like a big investment but keep in mind a few things.
- The immersive experience projectors provide will keep your customers in their seats longer giving them more opportunity to order food and drink.
- A huge screen will attract new customers by making your establishment stand out from the rest.
- A projector will last you at least 8-10 years and if you get a high quality cinema screen it can be good for a lifetime!
You may be tempted to try a cheap projector and screen but you, your bartenders and most importantly, your customers will find the content completely unwatchable.
